Because it’s that time of year…

The most popular (not including Alexander Skarsgard lightly touching your back as he walks past you while you’re wearing a backless dress)

Hello! I thought I’d share with you some of the lost read Emily Writes Weekly posts in case you missed them.

I’m having a break at the moment but I’m looking forward to being back with you soon. I was hoping it would be next week but we are all very sick so it won’t be.

Anyway - here are the most read…actually the various meditations paid subscribers are sent are the most read but I excluded those for the purpose of this list. Please excuse typos. I’m on my phone, it’s a long story, I’ll tell you in a few weeks x

Number one is: The Man

I interviewed a relationship coach and it was terrifying.

“What must it be like to be Jake? I can only go by what it feels like to spend 25 minutes on the phone to him.”

The man
Last week I asked you if I should publish this. We talked about whether it should go to other publishers or whether I should publish it just for paid subscribers or whether I should leave it in my drafts forever. You were so thoughtful in your responses to me and I was so grateful. There was no real consensus and I appreciated that - because these thing…

Number two is: Some Brains

“We can run and run and run and run and run and feeling nothing but the running until, so close to being out of breath, chest aching, ribs breaking, heart bleeding, someone comes in and puts both hands on your shoulders and says: Stop.

One.
Thing.
At.
A.
Time.

And someone takes your hand.
And there’s a sliver of sunshine.”

Some brains
My husband saw me and stopped what he was doing. He walked over to me and he put both his hands on my shoulders and said “one thing at a time”. And then he went back to mahi changing the needles on each of Eddie’s insulin pens.

Number three is: In the end....

My letter to the future for the In Your Dreams: Letters Aloud salon.

“In the end, the end of the world wasn’t anything like they’d expected it to be.”

In the end....
Hello friends. Tonight I spoke at an event In Your Dreams: Letters Aloud series. It’s a Salon by Pirate & Queen with The Spinoff - and I spoke with some amazing people: Clementine Ford, Paddy Gower, Anthonie Tonnon, and Karlya Smith. The theme was Letter to the Future. I really, really struggled with the theme.

Number four is: Stop being such a shit parent

“Today, I’d like to provide a guest post because I know I am not a parenting expert. I am just a mother actually parenting in the year 2022. Not like Steve Stevenson who is a neurologicaleducationator, a term that isn’t made up if that’s what you’re thinking. He’s also a child development specialist, a juvenile expansion coordinator, a youth improvement consultant, a minor advancement authority, and a kid renovation master.

Steve is a grandfather, a pop, a father, a gramps, a great-grandfather, a grandmother, and a dad. He has no neuroscience qualifications or science qualifications but shhh…

Steve is not judgemental in the way he judges you for your shit parenting and that’s why I invited him here to use this platform to share some no-nonsense, nonsense advice.”

Number five is: About last night....

It’s a post detailing the behind the scenes details of my book launch including what it’s like being on The Project and getting bumped on Breakfast TV and all the other things that happened on my trip.

About last night....
Kia ora my friends! Last night was the Tāmaki Makaurau launch of Needs Adult Supervision. It was at The Tuning Fork and I thought I’d fill you in on some of the stuff that went on behind the scenes! I arrived in Tāmaki on Sunday and found out I was being bumped for the Queen. Fair enough….

Number six is: When you find out your friend is a sexual predator - Grooming, truth and lies.

“I’m going to talk about a sexual predator in this post. I do not go into any detail about what he did to his victims. But I do talk about grooming. Please take care. I also want to be clear up front that while I’ve found the aftermath of what the person I know did traumatising, it is nothing like what his victim or victims have been through and to them I send all of my care and love. - Emily”

Number seven is: Christopher Luxon knows the truth about mediocrity

“There is a moment in Christopher Luxon’s latest media interview where he looks incredulously at the reporter as if to say - It’s like you don’t know what we’re about.”

Christopher Luxon knows the truth about mediocrity
There is a moment in Christopher Luxon’s latest media interview where he looks incredulously at the reporter as if to say - It’s like you don’t know what we’re about. The interview is on so-called ‘truancy’. Most of you reading this are parents who are trying to parent through a pandemic. You know as well as I do that the rates of ‘truancy’ are because w…

Number eight is: Shein, The Fat Spectrum and The Boots Theory

“This is I suppose, a very long way of saying that I am quitting Shein but I also wish we had more options so everyone could quit Shein. But - it’s not that easy.

It worries me that those who will get lectured on social media about the need to boycott Shein will be those who are low-income and fat. And those social influencers doing $150 hauls of tank tops will be ignored. It is almost always those with the least privileges who face the most criticism online.”

Shein, The Fat Spectrum and The Boots Theory
Welcome to Emily Writes Weekly! It’s lovely to see you. Thank you for your support. Today’s wee post is about fast fashion and fat fashion and how they intersect. I was reading about how Shein overtook Amazon last year in sales. Shein is a fast fashion e-commerce mega-platform. For a long time they’ve been known for

Number nine is: How fragile we are...

“Content warning: This post is about the death of my friend - she died in a crowd crush. It’s about grief and pain and it’s pretty raw. I don’t apologise for that, but I do want all of you, who I care very much about, to take care of you and make a decision about whether you want to read it. Life is tough right now, and it’s OK to opt out of reading things that you think might upset you too much.”

Number ten was: Behind the story...

“What goes unpublished and the angst behind the big ones...”

Behind the story...
I have a lot of unpublished pieces. They sit in my drafts or on my desktop and they never see the light of day. An interview I did yesterday is hovering in this limbo - will it be published? If it is, can I handle the inevitable backlash? I wanted to talk a bit more about that today in the privacy of a subscriber-only email…

I want to thank you for your support this year. It has meant absolutely everything to me. I can’t put into words how much gratitude I have for every one of you.

This has been a huge and intense year for us and the past week has not been great. The fact that every now and then I get a little alert saying I have a new subscriber lifts my spirits so much. Thank you x thank you x thank you x

See you soon. Emily ❤️

Thank you so much for becoming a paid subscriber. It’s truly the best Christmas present for me and my whānau and I’m super grateful x
